Women in Medicine at Columbia
(WIM@C) is a resident-led group that
aims to support, inspire, and promote
the advancement of women residents
in Columbia’s Department of Medicine,
with the goal of fostering an environment
where women residents thrive personally
and professionally. This group was originally
founded in 2015 by three women
residents and has grown into a large and
dynamic forum for discussion, mentorship,
and education. In addition to an executive
committee of six resident leaders, WIM@C
is supported by the residency program
leadership, two faculty sponsors, and a
steering committee of women residents,
fellows, and attending physicians.
The group hosts a variety of monthly events throughout the year addressing career development, leadership, worklife balance, and gender equity. Recent events have included fellow and faculty panels, a negotiations workshop, a welcome dinner, a semi-annual bookclub, and a yearly capstone speaker event. We have also collaborated with women’s groups in other departments and the medical school to build a community across the medical center. We publish a monthly digital newsletter, generating an online forum for the exchange of ideas and promotion of events relevant to the group.
WIM@C is also involved in the resident recruitment process (look out for our applicant happy hour toward the end of the interview season!) so that applicants can feel integrated into the supportive environment our group creates. This year, we look forward to presenting an abstract about our goals and structure at the Group on Women in Medicine and Science annual conference and hosting the first ever interdepartmental happy hour for women residents. In the future, we hope to see the group continue to grow and change with the needs of our women residents, and with your contributions! We believe that WIM@C plays an invaluable role in fostering the success of women trainees and by extension, the department as a whole. We encourage you to ask questions about the experiences of women trainees wherever you visit and especially as you consider making Columbia your residency training community.

Women In Medicine Initiatives
Yearly capstone event: Each year, we invite a woman at the top of her field to share some career advice with our members. In our 2017 event, Dr. Laura Forese, COO of NYP, discussed the physical act of "leaning in" and how to create new opportunities from volunteering for jobs that others don't want to do.
Fellowship panel: In the fall during interview season, we invite women fellows to share their experiences in the application process and interview trail with our current residents.
Junior / senior faculty panel: We host junior and senior faculty panels each year to hear from our attendings about the challenges they continue to face as women in medicine and how they have navigated their work environments to be successful in their careers.
Semi-annual book club: Twice per year, we host a book club in which we discuss a book relevant to women in medicine. Recent books have included "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," and "When Breath Becomes Air."
Interdepartmental happy hour: We will be hosting the first ever interdepartmental happy hour this year, for women residents across all specialties to get to know each other.

WIM@C is a phenomenal forum for women to share and bond over their experiences in medicine. I love that we have the opportunity to come together as residents, fellows, and attendings to socialize, provide wisdom, and learn from each other. The best part of residency is the group of brilliant people you get to work with, and some of the most inspiring role models are those I have met through WIM@C.
