Letter From The Chairman

Dear Applicant,

On behalf of the Faculty and Staff of the Department of Medicine, I am pleased to welcome you to our Internal Medicine Residency Program. Over the past century, the accomplishments of alumni of our residency program have brought distinction to the Department of Medicine of Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital. Drawing upon this rich tradition of house staff education, we continue to strive to train the future leaders of American medicine. Our diverse and talented faculty approach the education of housestaff with great enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence, embodied in our two attending system on the Wards and Clinics and in the opportunities we provide for research in our clinics and laboratories.

Our program’s strength is predicated on graduated patient responsibility, commitment in particular to the care of the underserved, devotion to the rigorous didactic training and, most especially, to an exceptionally able cadre of house officers who educate and inspire each other. Our training environment has become better and stronger as a result of the many forces that have reshaped hospitals and training programs across the nation. New York Presbyterian Hospital has emerged as one of the nation’s largest hospital systems and is consistently recognized as a leading academic medical center. The Department of Medicine is the largest Department of the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, and is thus the cornerstone of one of the nation’s largest and most robust academic medical centers. We have structured our program to ensure the best possible working conditions for our residents, while assuring the breadth and depth of experience necessary to build confidence and expertise in caring for the most challenging patients. The population of Northern Manhattan, including a vibrant Spanish speaking community, has increasingly looked to us for their medical care.

Approximately half of the inpatients at the Columbia University Medical Center are served by the Department of Medicine and 70% of those are admitted through the Emergency Department. We have a growing inpatient census and an expanding resident outpatient practice in our Associates in Internal Medicine clinics. We are committed to nurturing the career development of our residents and facilitating opportunities to pursue additional advanced clinical and research training. Specifically, we work individually with each house officer to ensure superlative mentoring and career development. We are focused on achieving excellence in your training in order to enable you to realize your full potential as physicians. We welcome your inquiries and applications.
